Changing the partition layout of your VPS and VDS after installation | Linux

  • How to easily change your partition layout on your VPS or VDS.

Backup of all important data before proceeding! Changes to the partition table always bear the risk of complete data loss.

  • Boot your VPS / VDS into the rescue-system
  • Now connect through VNC (How to use VNC to connect to your VPS and VDS)
  • Login as “root”
  • To perform changes on the partition easily use gparted
  • To start the GUI type “startxfce4” within VNC console and wait a few seconds until the graphical interface appears
  • On the upper left side you will see “Applications”, open it and select “Run Program”
  • Type “gparted” within the application finder and the app should start immediately

Email Protocols – POP3, IMAP and SMTP and mail settings

  • POP3: Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3)
  • IMAP: Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP)
  • SMTP: Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)

Incoming mail server (POP3 or IMAP):

mail.domain.com

Server hostname can also be used as mail server. For example, server.bdhostit.com

IMAP Settings:

  • IMAP port: 143 (IMAP non-encrypted port)
  • IMAP port: 993 (IMAP encrypted port support SSL)

Server requires encrypted connection (SSL). (Apple Mail users should tick “Use SSL”)

POP3 Settings:

  • POP3 port: 110 (POP3 non-encrypted port)
  • POP3 port: 995 (POP3 encrypted port support SSL)

Server requires encrypted connection (SSL). (Apple Mail users should tick “Use SSL”)

Username: EMAIL ADDRESS
Password: EMAIL PASSWORD

Outgoing mail server (SMTP):

mail.domain.com

  • SMTP Port = 465 (SMTP encrypted port support SSL)
  • SMTP Port = 587 (SMTP encrypted port support SSL)

Understanding DNS records – A, CNAME, ALIAS, URL, MX, CERT, NAPTR, PTR, TXT

A record

Maps a name to IP addresses.

CNAME record

Maps a name to another name. It should only be used when there are no other records on that name.

ALIAS record

Maps a name to another name, but can coexist with other records on that name.

URL record

Redirects the name to the target name using the HTTP 301 status code.

  • The A, CNAME, and ALIAS records cause a name to resolve to an IP. Conversely, the URL record redirects the name to a destination. The URL record is a simple and effective way to apply a redirect for one name to another name, for example redirecting www.example.com to example.com.
  • The A name must resolve to an IP. The CNAME and ALIAS records must point to a name.
  • Never use a CNAME record for your root domain name (e.g. example.com).

MX Record

Mail Exchanger (MX), similar to A name records but entirely devoted to sending and receiving e-mail.

CERT

CERT records store site certificates as part of the DNS information.

NAPTR Records

A rare record type that’s used to map telephone numbers and e-mail addresses for VoIP and SIP servers.

PTR Record

PTR directs IP traffic to domains.

TXT Record

TXT is used commonly to verifying domain ownership. It holds data sender policy framework (SPF) .
